Never before have we had the opportunities to connect to a broad audience like we do today. What does that mean for individuals, our culture, and for the future? Dan Carlin is a former television news reporter and radio talk show host who since 2005 has been producing two popular podcasts — one on history called Dan Carlin's Hardcore History and one on current events called Common Sense with Dan Carlin. The history podcast recently won iTunes' "Best Podcast of 2014" award and the Hardcore History episode/series on the Eastern Front in the Second World War was recently named the 5th best podcast episode of all time by Slate Magazine. His most popular podcast episodes have been downloaded between 2.5 and 3 million times. Total downloads for both podcasts since he started exceed 60 million....
On Saturday, November 4, I spoke to an audience of about 500 in Vancouver at the 2017 Students For Liberty Canada West Regional Conference. The broad topic for the day (which also included, among others, Theryn Meyer, Jonathan Pageau and Bret Weinstein) was The New Media: Where it is, Where it's Going, and What that Might Mean for All of US. I talked about my media experiences from my days with TVO's The Agenda and Big Ideas, as well as the consequences of the video lectures I began to place on YouTube beginning in 2013. Part personal reflection and history, part on-the-fly cultural commentary, this talk is my attempt to come to terms with the new Gutenberg revolution for video and the spoken word. They've dominated the human race, changing themselves into biomecanical appearance self-sufficient organisms. Far from the action footage and the explosions which define this film genre, the world is now an unshakeable place; victim of the alienation caused by the sent signals. Rettinger's Rants: New Media vs Old Media Give Netflix a try for 30 days: http://www.netflix.com/buffalo Jon R is back with an all new show where he rants and raves on various topics in and out of the tech world. On this week's episode, Jon rants about people who don't understand new media. The way we consume media has changed, there is no doubt about that, but some are having a hard time adjusting to this change. Recently, a website ran an article accusing YouTube videos of being terrible. The author complained that YouTube videos have failed to evolve and that production values have remained low. As members of YouTube and creators of new media, we take offense with his statements. You can't criticize something simply because you just don't understand it or don't like it. There is a rea...

Scrolling through our social media feeds feels like a harmless part of our daily lives. But is it actually as harmless at seems? According to social media expert Bailey Parnell, our growing and unchecked obsession with social media has unintended long term consequences on our mental health. As social media continues to become part of the fabric of modern life – the “digital layer” – abstinence is becoming less of an option. Bailey think it’s high time we learned to practice safe social before it’s too late. What are the common triggers? How are they affecting you over time? How can you create a more positive experience online? Bailey covers this and more in “Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health?” Bailey Parnell was recently named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women. She is...

With the proliferation of social media, we are increasingly engaged in identity work, that is, the forming, repairing, maintaining and revising our sense of self-worth and personal significance. The key question that this talk will seek to answer is "how are social media shaping our identities, that is, who we are and who we can become?" I will draw on insights from my research into identity work in the social virtual world Second Life to answer this question. Ulrike Schultze is Associate Professor in Information Technology and Operations Management at Southern Methodist University. Her research explores the impact of information technology on work practices. She has studied the work practice implications of knowledge management technology and of Internet-based self-service technology. ...
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Social Media historian Allison Graham offers a witty and ironic view of a society that feels alone together despite the hundreds of virtual connections we have online. With a global population growing up via Facebook and Twitter and a perceptible shift in human interpersonal connections, the constant need for social self-validation permeates our daily existence. This talk shares the funny and revealing insights of a life lived online and how social media is used to connect and disconnect us. Un vecchio e un bambino
si preser per mano
e andarono insieme
incontro alla sera;
la polvere rossa
si alzava lontano
e il sole brillava
di luce non vera;
l'immensa pianura sembrava arrivare
fin dove l'occhio di un uomo
e tutto d'intorno non c'era nessuno
solo il tetro contorno di torri di fumo
i due camminavano,
il giorno cadeva,
il vecchio parlava
e piano piangeva
con l'anima assente,
con gli occhi bagnati,
seguiva il ricordo
di miti passati.
I vecchi subiscon
l'ingiuria degli anni
non sanno distinguere
il vero dai sogni
i vecchi non sanno
nel loro pensiero
distinguer nei sogni
il falso dal vero.
E il vecchio diceva
coperto di grano
immagina i frutti
e immagina i fiori
e pensa alle voci
e pensa ai colori.
E in questa pianura
fin dove si perde
crescevano gli alberi
e tutto era verde;
cadeva la pioggia
segnavano i soli
il ritmo dell'uomo e delle stagioni.
Il bimbo ristette
lo sguardo era triste
e gli occhi guardavano
cose mai viste;
e poi disse al vecchio,
con voce sognante:
"Mi piaccio le fiabe
